I can understand differences between countries - it’s when you get different names for the same grape within the same area (as per your example) that it gets confusing. The Portuguese have several names for Tempranillo - is that necessary?

Then again, maybe it harks back to local traditions, when wines often used to be made for local consumption… In which case, it’s actually rather romantic.
